How to Maintain Business Relationships from a Distance

In the middle of a global pandemic, companies are focused on the safety and well-being of their employees. However, as companies move forward in this new business landscape, they must shift their attention to their clients as well. In a world in which more companies are transitioning to remote work environments and client dinners and in-person meetings have become impossible, businesses must think up creative solutions to stay connected and build relationships. As clients look to revamp their cost structures, businesses cannot assume that clients will stick by them without effort to maintain a relationship – businesses must continue to inspire.

Positive customer relationships lead to instant marketing and press as well as increased sales and loyal customer bases. Building strong customer relationships also offer companies the opportunity to stay in tune with what customers are looking for.

Harvard Business Review suggests five key strategies for maintaining existing customer relationships and establishing new ones throughout this period of transition. The publication notes the importance of communication, transparency and planning. Harvard Business Review’s five key strategies are outlined in greater detail below.

Humanize your company

Do not ignore the surrounding environment. Use company marketing material and communication to address global and societal issues, noting what your company is doing to tackle these dynamics head on.

Educate about change

With the changing business landscape comes required structural business changes. Make customers aware of the benefits of these changes so they are updated on how these changes may impact their relationships and feel more aligned with the company’s view.

Assure stability

Know your company’s strengths and repeat them. Adapt these strengths to the rapidly changing surroundings and make customers aware of how you are doing so. This will inspire brand loyalty.

Revolutionize offerings

Find ways to offer clients something new in this new set up: whether it be in the form of education, communication strategies, or feedback on problems that they have brought to the company’s attention.

Tackle the future

Be transparent about your long-term plan. Acknowledge that this plan may change. Offer regular updates to clients and go out of your way to check in with clients and see how you can be helpful in this new environment.
